Design Process

I have always imagined Edgar Allan Poe to be similar to the characters in The Tell-Tale Heart and The Raven. The Black Cat is a short story that contains the same sinister and guilt ridden hysteria as those other works so I wanted the imagery to convey the same idea. Cats have a reputation for being sneaky and mischievous and even sinister sometimes. The illustrations were heavily influenced by Kiyoshi Saito’s abstracted cats along with other works that feature cats behaving in a mysterious way.
