Brunswick i-Jet Lab internship
i-Jet Lab is an innovation center whose goal is to modernize the recreational boating experience. Projects made in this lab range from prototypes for mobile apps and websites to using of the latest technology on the market or latest technological innovation available to study or “hack” products for the marine space. Prototypes are designed and engineered to provide solutions for the Brunswick brands.
Below details a section of work I did at i-Jet Lab. These are the projects that are approved to be shared. This space has many projects going on at the same time with different degrees of progress so this collection is not an exhaustive list of the work I did there.
i-Jet Lab: Branding and Identity
I was part of a small team of i-Jet interns who worked on creating i-Jet Lab’s branding and identity system. We worked with the director, Troy Kollmann and had bi-weekly consultations with the Director of Industrial Design from Brunswick who was responsible for the original design of the old logo.
Together we created an identity that evokes i-Jet’s tech start up vibes with an air of professionalism and poise. This system includes: fonts and color palettes, logo design and general digital presence.
Check out the process page of how the identity came to be with the finalize Brand Guidelines.
“We crave new ideas”
The right shows a glimpse of the deliberation process for a few of our logo designs. The examples we selected were modern, minimalist and had an engineer/tech feel that we wanted to translate into our own design.
The logos we came up with is suppose to be an evolution of the original i-Jet logo (the grey logo on the bottom left). We wanted the design to evoke a feeling of modernness yet purposeful playfulness that was not found on the original logo. Additionally, we wanted to make sure Brunswick was bolder to convey who the parent company is and how our work is contributing to their presence in the marine space.
We mostly added additional materials to supplement the original design and color palette. We modeled our identity with the look and feel of the office environment such as the color palette of teal, yellow and grey blue. This was the color scheme of the office, so we leaned on that as we finished designing the look.
WeBoat: UI Design
One of the projects I was tasked to be the designer for was WeBoat. This is a planning app designed for boaters to provide efficient and convenient information for outings on the boat. Responsibilities I had for the project was
Design the look and functions of the app
Create a working prototype to user test the app in XD
Interview and survey boaters to improve the app
Collaborated with a programmer to create a functioning prototype
The above is a selection of the first working prototype of the app that was used to test the first group of users.
The above shows a glimpse of the first round of screens translated to the last iteration of the design. We wanted WeBoat to be easy to use, quick to plan and easy to access memories/past trips.
After testing using low fidelity prototypes, I was able to narrow down the task tree to minimize the steps needed to get through planning a trip, editing a trip and seeing a previous trip.
We wanted this app to target older millennial with age ranging from 30s to 40s. We drew from existing apps that had uses “cards” and floating elements to give it a weightless feel while the choice of colors references the water and friendliness.
WEBOAT: BRANDING AND IDENTITY
This identity is an extension of the mobile interface so that audiences can understand this product as a whole. The design choices are guided by the interface designs. I was responsible for WeBoat’s branding and identity design. This includes:
Sketch potential logos ideas, implementing feedback and creating the final design
Standardize the fonts and illustrations for the app
Implement identity on various presentation materials such as Powerpoint and email signatures, and other digital and analog mediums
WEBOAT Visual Brand Language Guidelines
This guide summarizes the logo design, the palette and other assets that can be used when talking about WeBoat. While designing the identity, the app interface was the major inspiration and director when making decisions.
